2nd Sunday of Ordinary Time (John 1:19-34)
by Fr. Long Phi Nguyen, SVD | 01/16/2026 | Sunday Written ReflectionIn today’s world, we are constantly encouraged to seek attention and put ourselves at the center. Social media, celebrity culture, and even everyday conversations often reward those who are the loudest, most visible, or most admired. We feel pressure to be noticed, to gain approval, or to collect more “likes,” as if visibility itself were a measure of worth.
Today’s Gospel presents a striking contrast. John the Baptist does not seek attention or recognition. Instead, he points away from himself and says simply, “Behold, the Lamb of God.” With these words, John steps out of the spotlight and places Jesus firmly at the center. He understands his mission clearly—not to promote himself, but to help others recognize and encounter Christ.
Through our baptism, each of us, like John the Baptist, is called to live this same ministry of witness. Our faith is not about self-promotion or public approval. It is about pointing others to Christ through the way we live, not through dramatic gestures, but through ordinary, faithful ways—patience, integrity, forgiveness, and compassion. The world may not notice these acts, but God does. And through them, Christ becomes visible. When our lives reflect humility, truth, and love, others are drawn—sometimes without a single word—to encounter Christ.
Yet to point others to Christ, we must first recognize him ourselves. John was able to recognize Christ as the Lamb of God because he remained attentive to God’s action and open to the Spirit. The same is true for us. When prayer and God’s word shape our daily lives and our decisions, we learn, like John, when to step aside so Christ can be seen.
As we go into this week, let us ask ourselves: Am I seeking attention for myself, or pointing others to Jesus? A simple act of kindness, a word of encouragement, or a quiet choice to do what is right may be the most powerful way we can say with our lives, “Behold, the Lamb of God.”
